  Watchtower study - so long and so boring

  i remember going to sunday meetings...the public talks went by fast (sometimes).

  but the watchtower study to me was so boring and not interesting at all.

  it felt longer than the public talk.

  I forgot to include another point from the radio.

  Apparently, part of the indoctrination process is self-indoctrination. This includes mind-numbing repetions of chants and mantras, such as "Hare, Hare Krishma," etc.

  In a WT field service context, perhaps this might include such mantras as, "Would you like to live forever in paradise?" or " Have you ever wondered about the kingdom that Jesus taught us to pray for?" In the course of a single morning, these get repeated over and over again until they're repeated on auto pilot, without thinking.

  At meetings it might perhaps be mantras like, for children, "God's name is Jehovah," or "Paradise." For adults, "Wasn't that a wonderful meeting?" or "Brother So-and-So's a marverllous speaker, isn't he?"

  However, whatever the mantra, the end result is the same: self-indocrtrination.

  2 years back i did a huge power point presentation about cults & jw's for a sociology of religion class.

  i came across some info pertaining to the wt being one of the largest landholders in nyc and also a 5th position in some business status.

  for the life of me, i can't find that source now!

  as everyone had guessed, the election has been set for may 5th.

  personally, this is my first opportunity 'post wt mind-control' to vote for our next government.

  i don't suppose that i will - 40 years of 'neutrality' and non-involvement have rather flattened my desire to take part in political change.. how about you?

  A radio programme recently suggested that cults regularly use long, boring meetings and discussion periods as indoctrination sessions.

  Apparently the theory is that it takes a certain period of boring monotony for the brain's critical reasoning faculties to shut down, but once it has, the brain then goes into a kind of trance-like hypnotic state, during which the most ridiculous notions will be accepted as 'truth.'

  did the serpent lose legs or feet as means of movement as a result of the divine curse recorded at genesis 3:14?.

  at genesis 3:14 we are told: "and jehovah god proceeded to say to the serpent: ?because you have done this thing, you are the cursed one out of all the domestic animals and out of all the wild beasts of the field.

  How many Bible studies does it take before brainwashing sets in?

  i would like to know how the study starts...... what kind of information is given to the potential new convert when he / she starts studying with j.w.

  's., lesson to lesson.. what is taught in the first few "lessons".. when the brainwashing starts to be taught.

  how many lessons it takes to convince the student that the w.t.

  I think itsallgoodnow has it right.

  The brainwashing began even before the Bible study started, while the JW's still giving you their 'sermon' and reading Rev 21, and the 'hook' is paradise.

  As soon as you start thinking, "It would be really nice if it was true," they've got you. Thereafter, your critical thinking is on hold, you WANT it to be true, so you ignore any doubts you may have had and convince yourself it MUST be true.

  After all, look at this neatly dressed, very sincere JW with the nice books with pretty pictures of lions and lambs and baskets of fruit and picnics and a beautiful garden with a lake at the bottom and lots of quotations from the Bible and they're not asking for any money...

  After that you're putty in their hands. You've forgotten the old saying: i f it seems too good to be true, it is too good to be true.

  Blood- would you/have you given/taken it?

  since leaving the jws and joining my current company i get asked every six months to give blood.

  i've never done it and still feel as if i had an accident i would be very reluctant to have a transfusion.. if its not too personal can i ask what others views are on this and your experiences if any?.
